Pamela Soldwedel
ARTIST BIO
Pamela Soldwedel was born in New York City in 1926. She studied sculpture as an undergraduate at Bennington College, and thereafter followed a varied career that included experience as a fabric designer; fashion show producer; radio disc jockey, radio and television commentator and producer; magazine publisher; and artistic coordinator in packaging design for a major fragrance house. Only after moving to Washington, D.C. in the mid-70's did Soldwedel resume her sculpture, attending the Corcoran School of Art, where she received the Martha von Hirsh Award and the Mary Lay Thom Sculpture Award for most outstanding work. She recently won the R.C.G. Merit Award of Excellence and was the 1995 recipient of the Artists Equity Association's "Best In Show" Merry Slocum Bean Award. Her works appear in numerous corporate and private collections.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Endings and beginnings, cycles of joy and sadness -- human instincts and emotions too basic or complex to articulate in a figurative manner -- appear to me as abstract forms. Through the use of organic shapes, recalling humans or animals without specifically simulating either, I seek to evoke the passion, mystery and ambiguity that is central to the human experience.
Out of seemingly immutable stone and metal, I work to create the sensual, enjoying the challenge of making them seem soft and flowing. Indeed, these smoothly moving lines characterize many of my pieces.
Others are disrupted by breaks. Sections are split or sliced symbolizing trauma. But all these sculptures are filled with hope. The separations are such that they may be rejoined. Life continues. The scarred but strengthened spirit resumes its cyclical journey to new beginnings.
